Suggestions for books

Hi ladies,

I have a couple of suggestions for books to add to the list. I got very inspired at a beautiful bookstore in Oregon this weekend, so here we go:

1. Swamplandia! by Karen Russell
Nominated for the Orange prize, here is the blurb from Amazon:

"From the celebrated twenty-nine-year-old author of the everywhere-heralded short-story collection St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves (“How I wish these were my own words, instead of the breakneck demon writer Karen Russell’s . . . Run for your life. This girl is on fire”—Los Angeles Times Book Review) comes a blazingly original debut novel that takes us back to the swamps of the Florida Everglades, and introduces us to Ava Bigtree, an unforgettable young heroine."

I heard the author speak about the book on NPR and have been meaning to read it ever since.

2. The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro

"The Remains of the Day is a profoundly compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of his fading, insular world postwar England. At the end of his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back over his career to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving “a great gentleman.” But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington’s “greatness” and graver doubts about his own faith in the man he served."

I would guess a number of you have read this already, but I thought it was worth checking. My husband waxed uncharacteristically lyrical about this book.

3. Shadow Tag by Louise Erdrich

"When Irene America discovers that her husband, Gil, has been reading her diary, she begins a secret Blue Notebook, stashed securely in a safe-deposit box. There she records the truth about her life and her marriage, while turning her Red Diary—hidden where Gil will find it—into a manipulative farce. Alternating between these two records, complemented by unflinching third-person narration, Shadow Tag is an eerily gripping read. "

I've liked almost all of her books to date.
