Considerations for our next meeting

Hello, book-friends–

Kim suggested a new M.O. for our next book selection, wherein we develop a selection of three books, give everyone time to skip to a bookstore or library to browse a few pages and let that browsing inform the single choice for the next book we'll read. This way, we'll all have a bit of a "teaser" opportunity before we pick the next book on deck.

This time around, Amanda, Kim and I reviewed some "best of" lists that Kim had compiled and we pulled a few options from the overlap of those lists, plus a previous suggestion that might be more of a quick-flippin', candy-read to offset some of the more, ah, somber material we've been covering lately. Click on the book titles to get to Amazon's abstract pages...

  1. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (400+ pp. BUT I think that's because Amazon's got the "enriched" version with a bunch of extra stuff in it, so the actual novel itself is shorter)
  2. Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener (384 pp.)
  3. The Help by Kathryn Stockett (464 pp.—okay, so this one isn't enriched but is supposedly a real page-turner)

Take a look and we can vote here on the blog for our next read, which we're tentatively scheduling for Sunday, May 22 (pending approval from our next hostess, Anne, of course). We thought we'd shoot for a week before Memorial Day weekend, sound off if that works for everyone!

Happy weekend,

Elizabeth

  1. Hey ladies I have an Op Ed writing workshop on May 22nd and I'm out of town the previous and next weekends. I will be back the first weekend in June (the 5th), but feel free to meet on the 22nd. This summer is going to be crazy in a good way :) R

  2. May 22 or June 5 works for me, and I am happy to host-ess the meeting on either day. I vote for The Help (for some reason I can't vote via the poll).

    Happy April!!
